The grand Long Island homes that inspired ‘The Great Gatsby’
Cady-Lee, is Shingle Style house located in the Takoma neighborhood in Washington, D.C.. The house is named for Lucinda Cady & her daughter Mary Lee who both owned the house. Henry & Lucinda Cady moved to Takoma Park from Ashland, Virginia in 1886. Henry Cady was a real estate & insurance salesman. They hired Washington architect Leon Dessez to design their new home. Frederick Dudley built the house, which was completed in 1887.
D - Kingscote, a Gothic Revival house built 1839. Kingscote was one of the first summer "cottages" constructed in Newport. Now owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County. George Noble Jones constructed the cottage along a farm path known as Bellevue Ave. At the outbreak of the ACW the Jones family left Newport & in 1864 the house was sold to William Henry King, an Old China Trade merchant. The area is less than 1 acre.
